About

Poplar Forest is summer home of Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. The 4800 acres estate was inherited by Jefferson in 1773 from his father-in-law and expanded in 1806 with a new octagonal house.

The house was eventually declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
