Phoenix is the fifth largest city in United States by population. The city itself has 1.6 million people and the entire Phoenix metropolitan area known as Valley of the Sun has total population of 4.3 million, the 12th largest in United States. The city was incorporated in 1881 but records of human activity dated back more than 1000 years ago as the land was occupied by the Hohokam people. Phoenix got its present name as the word described a city born from the ruins of a former civilization.

Today the city of Phoenix is a major transportation hub in North America and a main transportation, financial, industrial, cultural and economic center of the Southwestern United States. The city itself is divided into 15 urban villages based on based on historically significant neighborhoods and communities - Ahwatukee Foothills, Alhambra, Camelback East, Central City, Deer Valley, Desert View, Encanto, Estrella, Laveen, Maryvale, North Gateway, North Mountain, Paradise Valley, South Mountain and Rio Vista.

Culture and Entertainment
Phoenix has several notable museums including Phoenix Art Museum which has collection of 18,000 art works across the world, Heard Museum which displays native culture and art, Pueblo Grande Museum, the Phoenix Zoo and Arizona Science Center.

Phoenix is also home to professional sports teams of five national sport leagues including Arizona Cardinals of NFL football, Arizona Diamondbacks of MLB baseball Phoenix Suns of NBA basketball, Phoenix Coyotes of NHL hocky and Phoenix Mercury of WNBA basketball. Phoenix also provides outdoor activities such as waterparks, amusement parks, garden and municipal parks.
