About
Fontana is the second largest city in the county of San Bernardino with population of 181,640 in 2007. The city began as home for many chicken ranches, hog farms, and citrus and walnut orchards. During World War II, the arrival of Kaiser’s steel mill and San Bernardino Freeway sparked the growth.
The completion of Auto Club Speedway or formerly known as California Speedway pushed Fontana to the nation's spotlight as auto racing fans around the nation flooded the streets, hotels and restaurants for NASCAR racing - a well known event for auto racing fans.
The housing boom this decade bring the city's population to close to 200 thousand and gave city enough revenue to build new landmarks such as Center Stage Theater, Fontana Park and Lewis Library, the largest Library in the county.
